Beeston Town Guide

Located some 3 miles to the South-West of Nottingham, yet very much retaining its own identity and ‘town’ feel,  Beeston is vibrant and popular with strong employment centres, excellent transport links, a range of independent and national retailers and a variety of leisure and cultural activities.

In the nineteenth century it was decided that the name came from the idea that Beeston was a ‘hive of industry’, thus came about the Bee which can be seen everywhere around Beeston from the Council building to the refuse bins, we even have a sculpture by renowned artist Sioban Coppinger that depicts a man surrounded by bees!

Beeston has strong ties with Nottingham University with the Park campus located to the East of the town centre. This provides a specialised professional workforce  and gives Beeston a multi- cultural graduate and post graduate population.

There are excellent transport links from Beeston, the train station runs services to and from London’s St. Pancras every hour and connecting services to Derby and further afield are even more regular. There is a reliable bus network operated by Trent Barton and Nottingham City transport and the relatively new Nottingham Express tram system gives easy access to Nottingham University, the Queens Medical Centre and the city centre. For those looking to commute, there’s the A52 link road to Derby and Grantham and junction 25 of the M1 Motorway is around 4 miles away.

Beeston’s main shopping area is situated along the High Road, much of which has now been pedestrianised. There are national retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco’s, Wilko’s and Argos, but the town is best known for its selection of high-quality independent stores like Fred Hallams (Greengrocer and Fish/Game monger), Birds the bakers and Iguazu Fair Trade (Furniture and Gifts). Travelling further along the High Road, towards Broadgate Park, there are specialist east Asian and Mediterranean food shops. The main shopping centre, ‘The Square’ has seen significant development with the implementation of the tram and now has a contemporary feel, hosting seasonal Craft Fairs and Markets throughout the year. At the ‘out-of-town’ retail park at Chilwell, there are a range of national retailers such as M&S Food, TK Maxx, Matalan, Next, Halfords and Sports Direct, all with ample car parking provided.

There are numerous restaurants and takeaways, offering a wide selection of food from around the World, including the 2016 winner of The Vegetarian Food Awards, Café Roya. Diners can make the short journey to Nottingham to enjoy a meal out or alternatively, visit one of the 40 restaurants listed by tripadvisor within the town. Amores on Station Road could be your choice for Italian, or maybe Latino’s on Chilwell Road. Table 8 on Wollaton Road offers a lunchtime, early diners and evening menu and Yiannis, on Wollaton Road, serves Meze and a full Greek menu. The Frustrated Chef on Chilwell Road has both a lunchtime and evening menu and Korea House on the High Road offers a chance for either you or one of the Chef’s, to cook your meal ‘at the table’. Odin’s Table provides a genuine taste of Sweden and Scandinavian food. For Indian food try Nimboo on Villa Street, The Cottage Balti on Chilwell Road or Haveli on Attenborough Lane.

For the sports enthusiast, Beeston is home to England Hockey Premier League team “Beeston Hockey Club” who play at Highfields Sports Club on University Boulevard, also the venue for the Nottingham Open Tennis Tournament. Other fitness facilities include the Pure Gym, Bramcote Leisure Centre (with its’ popular family pool) and the nearby Village Hotel Gym and pool ‘membership’ facility.

Part of ‘The National Cycle Route’ (London – Keswick) passes through Beeston, Nottingham City Centre and over to West Bridgford. For the runners amongst you, there’s a weekly 5km Park Run around the Rylands area and each September Nottingham hosts the Robin Hood Marathon and half marathons.

There are also two golf courses adjacent to the town: Beeston Fields and Chilwell Manor. Beeston offers an abundance of cultural and leisure attractions such as the award-winning Attenborough Nature Reserve, the Canalside Heritage Centre in the Rylands area, Wollaton Hall and its’ Park Gardens. The striking Elizabethan Mansion you may recognise from the earlier Batman films, houses a local history museum.

We also have the ‘Blue plaque trail’ courtesy of the Civic Society which links together historical buildings and famous people connected to Beeston – there are 34 around the town, so pull out your walking boots and get exploring!

Beeston enjoys a strong industrial base and boasts a number of national and international companies, with world or regional headquarters in the area. There are more than 450 companies based in the town, amongst the largest being Boots, ZF, Siemens, Atos and Chinook Sciences.
