What happened in 1989? ....
It has been 30 years since Mr Robert Ellis opened his first estate agency branch on Market Place at the heart of Long Eaton town centre. We have been selling and letting properties in the town ever since and during this, our anniversary, we thought we would take a nostalgic look back to what life was like at the end of the 1980s!
Margaret Thatcher, President Gorbachev and George Bush were bringing the cold war to an end and the Berlin Wall had come down. In the world of technology the Nintendo Game Boy was flying off the shelves, Motorola mobile phones were all the rage and the World Wide Web was still in its infancy.
People were queuing at the cinema to see Back to the Future II, Dead Poets Society and watch Indiana Jones be triumphant once more in his “Last Crusade”.
You may be interested to know that by 1990 the average house price in the UK had reached £60,000 (and was still climbing) and mortgage interest rates were over 11% – Average house price in 2019 is now £192,757 in the East Midlands (Jan 2019).
In the spring addition of the 2049 news letter we will be looking back at the past 30 years and finding out what happened to Brexit, global warming and life on Mars!! Whatever happens, Robert Ellis Estate Agents will still be here, selling and letting properties in the town as always …
